XO, Kitty is a romantic dramedy streaming series created by Jenny Han for Netflix. The series is a spin-off of the To All the Boys film series; which was an adaptation of Han's book trilogy .
The series marks the first Netflix television series, spun off from a Netflix original film.[1] Han also writes, executive produce, and is a showrunner. Following Kitty Covey going on her own journey to find true love, Anna Cathcart reprises her role as the character.
Synopsis
Kitty Covey, who believes she is extremely knowledgeable on love, moves halfway across the world, aiming to reconnect with her long-distance boyfriend. She finds, however, that a relationship is much more complex when it is your own feelings of love at risk.[2]

- Anthony Keyvan as Q Shabazian[3]; a fellow American who is half Iranian and half Filipino who quickly becomes Kitty’s best friend and confidante. He is one of the school’s few openly gay students.[4]
- Gia Kim as Yuri Han[3]; a rich, gorgeous social media star who is the daughter of two extremely successful parents: a high-powered businessman and the principal of K.I.S.S. She’s a paparazzi magnet, which means she has to keep her deepest secrets close to herself.[4]
- Sang Heon Lee as Min Ho[3]: the ultra-privileged, who is used to getting his way — especially after his parents’ very messy divorce left him to his own devices most of the time. While it may seem as though Min Ho cares more about skincare routine than anything else, he’s actually fiercely loyal to his friends, including longtime buddy Dae.[4] kitty ‘s boyfriend

Production
In March 2021, it was announced that a series spin-off to To All the Boys is in development, with each episode being a half-hour romantic comedy. The series will be developed as a Netflix exclusive, from Awesomeness and ACE Entertainment.[9] The books' original author Jenny Han was reported to be the creator, writer and executive producer as well as writing the script for the pilot with Siobhan Vivian.[10] Anna Cathcart was also reported to be reprising her role as Kitty Covey.[11] Six months later, Netflix ordered ten episodes along with announcing other crew members.[12] Sascha Rothchild and Matt Kaplan joined Han as executive producers while the former is also the showrunner along with Han.[13]
Casting
On April 5, 2022, Choi Min-young, Anthony Keyvan, Gia Kim, Sang Heon Lee, Peter Thurnwald, and Regan Aliyah were cast as series regulars while Yunjin Kim, Michael K. Lee, and Jocelyn Shelfo joined the cast in recurring roles.[14] On May 18, 2023, it was confirmed that Jenny Han, the author behind the To All the Boys I've Loved Before books had a cameo in this episode.[15]
Filming
By April 2022, production had begun in Seoul.[3][16]
Trivia
- On May 11, 2023, the series held its premiere on this day at the Netflix Tudum theater in Hollywood, CA at 11PM PST. However, the writers, showrunners and directors opted to sit the event out as part of WGA’s strike efforts.[17]
- However, some of the cast such as Choi Min-young, Anna Cathcart, Gia Kim, Anthony Keyvan, and Sang Heon Lee attended the event.[18]
- On May 17, 2023, while the rom-com series premieres on May 18, the first seven minutes of XO, Kitty can be watched earlier.[19]
- On May 18, 2023, Gia Kim and Sang Heon Lee confirmed that they are siblings in real life.[20]
- On June 14, 2023, XO, Kitty was renewed for a Season Two.[21]
Reception
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 75% approval rating with an average rating of 4.3/10, based on 8 critic reviews.[22] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 67 out of 100 based on 7 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[23]
